ASPIRE offers variety of free classes

The Adult Basic & Literacy Education Program has a new name, ASPIRE, and provides the following services:

Work Ready -- Prepare for the local workforce. Earn three national credentials proving work readiness. The Work Ready class also includes streamlining a resume, creating a cover letter, soft skills, mock interviewing and more.

This is a three-week, 12-hour course held from 6 to 8 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday at Maplewood Career Center in Ravenna. Sessions are held once a month. Call to register.

GED classes -- Participants earn a GED at their own pace. Free GED pre-testing is available and participants have the possibility of earning their GED for free.

Distance Education -- Participants may work on their GED from home on their own computer or tablet.

Basic refresher skills in English, reading or math.

Test Prep for registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, electrician, and other professional/career exams.

Medical Readiness -- Prepare for the medical classroom with medical math, medical vocabulary, and soft skills.

Research the area of interest in the medical field, and learn about all the various jobs available in the medical field. Classes are held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at Maplewood Career Center. The next session is fall 2017.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) -- Learn basic English skills.

All of the classes and materials are free-of-charge with classes year round. There are classes in the morning, afternoon and evening with some locations on the bus route. The Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority now has service to Maplewood Career Center for ASPIRE classes and Adult Education courses in the evening.
