UH Portage Medical Center recently held its annual Volunteer Celebration Banquet at the Northeast Ohio Medical University's Education and Wellness (NEW) Center in Rootstown to honor its volunteers during National Volunteer Week with the theme "Our Volunteers Are Superheroes."
Last year, the hospital had 485 volunteers record more than 53,000 hours of service in a variety of capacities, including patient/visitor assistance assignments, Love on a Leash pet partner program, Auxiliary fundraising, musical arts and pastoral care support.
Volunteers and their guests enjoyed posing for photos in front of comic book superhero statues and with members of the planning committee who dressed for the theme. After a dinner buffet, they were entertained by the competition acro team from All About Dance! By Kristen in Stow and award-winning escape artist, Michael Griffin.
Tom Conner, director of ambulatory services, served as the master of ceremonies and welcoming remarks were provided by Sandra Haskell, manager of volunteer services/community relations, Bill Benoit, chief operating officer, and Steve Jones, president of UH Community Hospitals-East Region.
