Summer's here, and you do not want to stay trapped in your home, all day, every day!
There are some inexpensive, fun things to do here in Portage County. Even if you do not have a car, you can call the Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority (330-678-1287) to take you. Fridays in July and August are free for seniors (on PARTA's main bus routes) and any other day the cost is $2 each way.
If you are 70 years of age or older, you can get a free fishing or hunting license from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.
How about lunch at a McDonald's they still offer free coffee to senior citizens.
How about a movie at the Garretsville Movie Theater $5 for seniors.
Or go a little farther, a little later in the summer, to the Portage County-Randolph Fair. Friday is a free day for seniors.
Another thought if you are feeling ambitious -- how about a walk in one of our county Parks? You can find one in almost every corner of our county.
For a nice evening, attend one of the free Home Heritage concerts in Kent or Ravenna. Bring a chair or blanket and sit on the ground or get there early and stake out one of benches.
Watch newspaper listings for other free evening concerts, most of our other larger communities offer them marvelous music not intended for teenagers.
Or go a lot farther. For $4 you can get into the Ohio State Fair on Aug. 1 -- Senior Day.
Stay closer to home and go to University Hospitals Portage Medical Center's Health Fair on July 22 at the hospital in Ravenna; it is free.
Take a (non-credit) class at Kent State University for free if you are 60 years old and have lived in Ohio for at least one year (the Senior Guest Program).
Go to a neighborhood library and borrow a book or a movie to watch at home (for free).
Become a volunteer at the UH Portage Medical Center (330-297-2591) and give something of yourself to help others. Other volunteer opportunities are available through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (330-298-2666)
Remember to do something! Do not spend another day at home alone.
Or you could spend a little more money and get completely out of town!
The Portage County Senior Center is going to the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh on July 25. The cost is $25 but the casino will give you $20 in free slot play and $5 toward your lunch.
The bus will leave from the parking lot next to Giant Eagle in Ravenna at 8 a.m. and return by 5 p.m. (This casino is located right next to the Steelers football stadium.)
Call 330-297-3456 to make a reservation, they will want payment in full prior to the trip.
Not wanting to go to a casino? Contact Paskey Tours (330-677-1000), or Western Reserve Tours (330-325-7330). Though they both offer casino trips, they do schedule a lot of other destinations like theaters, museums, etc.
