By Marci Piltz Record-Courier staff writer Alcohol, speed and failure to use a seatbelt were factors in a crash Sunday in Atwater that left a Rootstown teenager dead, according to the Ravenna Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol. Joshua P. Thompson, 18, of 4489 New Milford Road, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred shortly before 2 a.m. at the intersection of Waterloo and Eberly roads. According to Lt. George Williams of the Ravenna Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol, Thompson was traveling westbound on Waterloo Road when he ran a stop sign and failed to negotiate a curve. His 1988 Dodge Shadow traveled off the roadway, striking a tree before rolling over several times on its side, Williams said. Thompson was not wearing a seat belt, the patrol said, and the crash is being investigated. While investigating the crash, troopers determined that Thompson, a junior at Rootstown High School, had just left a party in the 600 block of Stroup Road in Atwater, where a large number of juveniles had been consuming alcohol, according to the patrol. The patrol and deputies from the Portage County Sheriffs Office went to the location of the party and charged one adult, Daniel E. Field, 18, of Rootstown, and 17 juveniles with prohibitions. Portage County Sheriff Duane Kaley said most of the juveniles charged were from the Rootstown area. Their charges, all first-degree misdemeanors, will be handled through juvenile court, Kaley said. Dean Mizer, superintendent of the Rootstown school district, said this morning counselors are on hand at the high school to talk with students about Thompsons death. Weve got counselors and ministers here today, and TownHall II is also going to be coming in. As many people as we need, well get in to talk with these kids. Thats the important thing, Mizer said. Counselors will be on hand throughout the remainder of the week, Mizer said. Calling hours for Thompson will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Dunn-Quigley-Ciriello & Carr Funeral Home, 811 Grant St., Akron. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Pauls Catholic Church. E-mail: mpiltz@recordpub.com Phone: (330) 296-9657
