Final tallies turned in

By Mike Sever Record-Courier staff writer The final votes are in and certified for Portage Countys May 6 primary. The official turnout, including 66 provisional ballots added in, was 14,336 ballots cast for a 14.98 percent turnout. It was the lowest turnout in several years for a countywide election. In Ravennas Democrat Ward 3 council contest between Mark Gabriel and Ronald Postlethwaite, each picked up one vote in the final count, giving Gabriel 133 to 88 for Postlethwaite, in the final certified tallies by the Portage County Board of Elections. In Kents council primaries, Don Haines picked up one vote, giving him 107 to 120 for winner Edward C. Bargerstock in the Ward 5 contest. Beth Oswitch added one more vote in the Ward 6 contest, giving her a final count of 144 to 116 for Carol Neff. In Streetsboros four-way contest for mayor nominees, newcomer Mark J. Pavlick added nine votes, giving him 1,329 to 665 for incumbent Joseph Collica. They will oppose each other on the November general election ballot. Each of the challengers also picked up votes in the final tally. Linda Kovacs finished with 375 and Stan Jankowski had 219. Certified tallies in Streetsboros council contests were: Ward 1, Ron Stenglein (179), Chuck Kocisko (148) and Julie D. Sanders (107); Ward 2, (all write-in candidates) Tom Wager (258), Joseph Krsak (18) and Rob Starkey (14); Ward 3, (write-in candidate) Bob Hager (81); and Ward 4, Dolores Venneri (340). In issue contests, final certified tallies by the board of elections were: Issue 1, for (495), against (654); Issue 2, for (180), against (47); Issue 3, for (86), against (178); Issue 4, for (95), against (174); Issue 5, for (217 ), against (67); Issue 6, for (383), against (574); Issue 7, for (571), against (206); Issue 8, for (1,243), against (886); Issue 9, for (926), against (1,266); Issue 10, for (1,032 ), against (1,120); Issue 11, for (5), against (9); Issue 12, for (55), against (20); Issue 13, for (242), against (437); Issue 14, for (4,850 ), against (6,578); Issue 15, for (557), against (840); Issue 16, for (1,492), against (607); and Issue 17, for (45), against (36).
