A landmark block in downtown Garrettsville was destroyed by fire this afternoon in a massive blaze that filled the area with clouds of billowing black smoke that could be seen for miles.

The three-story block on Main Street that formerly housed Irwin Hardware in a structure dating to the 1850s was gutted.

The blaze destroyed about a half-dozen businesses, including The Shaker Tree, Chic and Shabby, a barbershop, the law office of Attorney Daniel Timoons and a doctor's office.

Firefighters from several communities remained on the scene at 5 p.m. The blaze was at its height shortly after noon.

No injuries were reported, although a firefighter reportedly received hospital treatment. No cause or estimate of damages was available.

This does remind me of a few fires in downtown Kent beginnig in 1972.
