A 15-year-old Franklin Township boy is facing a charge of reckless homicide in Portage County Juvenile Court in the March 12 shooting of an 11-year-old relative inside a residence on Johnson Road.
Portage County Prosecutor Victor Vigluicci confirmed Friday that an investigation by the Portage County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation led him to file the charge against Logan Grootegoed.
The charge is the equivalent of a third-degree felony in adult court. An arraignment is scheduled for April 17 in juvenile court, Vigluicci said.
Sheriff's deputies said the 15-year-old shot and killed A.J. Nicholson while they were both inside the home at 695 Johnson Road just after 11:30 a.m. on March 12, a snow day for the Kent City Schools. A.J. died at the scene, and a handgun was recovered for testing, officials said.
