Mercury plunges to record levels

With clear skies and light winds, the mercury plunged to record levels early today. Readings were in the 40s, except the 50s along the Lake Erie shore.

Records were broken or tied at Youngstown, Mansfield, Columbus and Dayton.

The high pressure system will produce sunny and cool conditions on Friday, when highs will be in the 70s. Rain is possible in the north on Friday night and Saturday.

The record-high temperature for this date at the Columbus weather

station was 96 degrees in 1953 while the record low was 46 in 1982.

Sunset tonight will be at 7:58 p.m. and sunrise Friday at 7:03

a.m.
