Brimfield police on Tuesday arrested a township man on charges that he sexually abused an 11-year-old girl several times in the past six months.

Eric L. Hicks, 25, is charged with two counts of rape, both first-degree felonies, and two counts of gross sexual imposition, both third-degree felonies. The alleged incidents occurred at Hicks' residence on or after July 1, according to Brimfield police.

Police began an investigation after allegations surfaced that there was sexual abuse occurring in Hicks' home, according to Brimfield Police Chief David Oliver. Officers immediately investigated, and Hicks allegedly confessed to the alleged crimes, he said.

Hicks was arrested at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday and taken to the Portage County jail. He was ordered jailed on $250,000 cash bond following his arraignment that afternoon in Portage County Municipal Court in Ravenna. A condition of his bond is no contact with the alleged victim.

Additional charges are possible following a review of the evidence by the Portage County Prosecutor's Office and a Portage County grand jury. A preliminary hearing is set in Judge Barbara Oswick's courtroom in Kent on Friday.
