An Akron man is being held in the Portage County jail, charged with attempting to rob a Kent State University student on campus on Monday .

Philip A. Welker III, 37, is charged with robbery, a second-degree felony. He is being held on 10 percent of $30,000 bond pending future court dates.

According to KSU police, Welker approached a student on Hilltop Drive and demanded cash. Detective Lt. Chris Jenkins said the student then "did something we would not suggest a victim doing" and grabbed Welker, holding him until he could call police. "The victim grabbed the suspect and called us, and didn't let him go until we got there," Jenkins said. Officers arrived and arrested Welker, he said.
