Operations at the Newell Rubbermaid distribution center, located on the western border of Brimfield, began early last week, according to Rubbermaid spokeswoman Hannah Van Malssen.
In preparation for the facility's opening, Rubbermaid trained employees on the equipment, which is a combination of existing machinery from the previous facility and new equipment specific to the expanded storage and distribution capabilities at Brimfield's new center, Van Malssen said.
"The routine preparations for new hires and transferring employees is part of our commitment to training our workforce to ensure a safe work environment for all our people," she said.
The 807,000-square-foot facility employs about 175 people, which includes employees who wanted to transfer from the Wooster distribution center, which closes in March. Van Malssen would not comment about how many jobs transferred from Wooster to Brimfield, but said that Rubbermaid accommodated any employee who wanted a position at the new building.
The $25 million warehouse, located off Mogadore Road, near Interstate 76 in the Commerce Industrial Park, is the largest facility under one roof in Portage County.
Rubbermaid also is investing $25 million in the Mogadore manufacturing facility, which is located about seven miles from the new distribution center and employs more than 700 people. The expansion will allow for the creation of 140 full-time jobs and new machinery, equipment and infrastructure improvements.
