The Portage County Board of Health is accepting nominations for its annual "Friend of Public Health" award.
Eligible individuals will have demonstrated their genuine commitment to the health of Portage County residents and communities, through actions such as proven leadership or advocacy regarding issues that impact the health and safety of Portage County residents; applied creative and innovative solutions to local public health problems; developed nontraditional partnerships between disciplines or agencies to address public health issues; and increased awareness of public health issues through education and outreach activities.
Candidates must either live or work in Portage County. Current or past health department employees and their immediate family members are not eligible to receive the award.
Nominations may be submitted as a brief (500-word maximum) summary describing the individual's contributions to local public health. Self-nominations are acceptable.
Nominations must be received by Feb. 22 and sent to DuWayne Porter, Health Commissioner, 449 S. Meridian St., Ravenna, OH 44266 or by email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Winners will be notified March 1 and will be recognized at the annual Portage County Health Department Advisory Council meeting March 20 at the Ravenna Elks Lodge.
Last year's recipient was Dr. Kenneth Rupp. Dr. Rupp served the residents of Portage County by working at the health department for 43 years, serving as health commissioner for 27 of those years and a member of the board of health for 14 years. He was a physician in private practice, was active in numerous endeavors, and served as a volunteer firefighter.
