No injuries reported after motorist drives into Dollar General

No one was injured after an elderly Stow woman crashed through the front doors of a Dollar General on Kent Road around 1:15 p.m. Thursday.

Stow Fire Department Capt. Mark Stone said it appeared the driver had mistook the gas pedal for the brakes as she was pulling into a parking space outside the store at 3295 Kent Road.

Store employee Stosh Slater, who was near the front of the store at the time, said he was in disbelief after the driver crashed through the front doors.

Slater was working just feet away when the accident occurred.

"I looked over to see if there was anybody at the register and kind of did a double-take, and she was just coming in," Slater said.

He said all customers and other employees were either outside the store or in the back when the accident happened.

Slater said it appeared the woman was attempting to park when she accelerated and went between two pillars outside the entrance before crashing into the store.

Altieri's Pizza owner Dennis Altieri was just arriving at work when the accident happened. The restaurant is in the same plaza next door to Dollar General.

"I heard this crash and I thought it was something on the street," Altieri said. "The guy next to me got out of his car and said, 'Did you see that?' He said, 'Call 911 right away -- somebody just ran into Dollar General."'

Shattered glass, spilled merchandise and broken bricks could be seen strewn across the entrance where the mangled front doors laid around 2 p.m. Tire-tread marks were also visible on the store floor.

It was unclear how much damage had been done at the time or whether the motorist would be cited.
