Merle Mollenkopf, Portage County 'poet laureate,' dead at 78

Merle Mollenkopf, who was known to many as Portage County's unofficial poet laureate, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013 at his home in Kent following a brief illness. He was 78.

Mr. Mollenkopf was a poet who enjoyed sharing his own work as well as the work of other poets. He committed thousands of poems to memory and would recite them at gatherings such as Art in the Park in Kent and other arts events.

He also was an activist who was involved in the protests surrounding the eviction of senior citizens from the Silver Oaks apartment complex in 2011.
