Tallmadge — The Ohio State Patrol arrested a Barberton man March 9 following a pursuit which ended with the suspect’s vehicle hitting a Tallmadge Circle tree.
According to Lt. Christopher Heverly of the Ravenna Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol, about 7:30 a.m., a patrol officer attempted to stop a black 2005 Saturn Vue driven by Michael J. Klatte Jr., 20, on Route 261 for speeding.
The suspect fled westbound to Howe Road before south on Route 91.
After crashing his vehicle into a tree on Tallmadge Circle near East Avenue, the suspect fled on foot. After a short pursuit on foot, police say he was apprehended without further incident.
Klatte was treated and released at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna before being incarcerated in the Portage County Jail on charges of failure to comply, speeding and a seatbelt violation.
According to the highway patrol, Klatte, who has a prior felony for fleeing and an outstanding misdemeanor warrant, was driving with a suspended driver’s license.
A preliminary hearing has been set for March 15.
Tallmadge Police Lt. Ron Williams said Tallmadge units were not advised of the situation until the vehicle had crashed. “They did respond to assist, but the driver had already been caught,” Williams said.
