A man who suffered from medical complications while being detained by the Portage County Sheriff's Office Tuesday afternoon was pronounced dead after he was transported to Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Portage County Sheriff David Doak said deputies responded to a report of a fight in the 6700 block of McElrath Avenue in Ravenna Township at about 1 p.m. and detained a man who fit the description of one of the suspects involved and had an outstanding warrant from Bainbridge Township, in Geauga County.
Doak said he was waiting until he was sure the man's next of kin had been notified of the death before he released his name. Doak said he could not yet release an accurate place of residence for the man, who was in his early 50s.
Doak said the man was placed in the back of a patrol car, and then "had some kind of medical issue." The Ravenna Township Fire Department responded to the scene and transported the man to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Doak said he could not comment on whether injuries from the fight led to the man's death.
The other individual involved in the fight has not been arrested or charged with a crime.
Doak said the Portage County Sheriff's Office would release additional information about the circumstances surrounding the man's death Wednesday.
Representatives from the Portage County Coroner's Office confirmed an ongoing investigation in the case, but said any additional information would be released by the sheriff's office.
