Saying he has overcome the health issues that caused him to resign as Aurora mayor, Lynn McGill is looking forward to returning to city government and recently filed petitions to run for a Council-at-large seat in the November election.
The Portage County Board of Elections confirmed March 15 that McGill is the first person to file petitions for the fall election. The filing deadline for city government posts is Aug. 22 at 4 p.m. The Council-at-large seat that is up for grabs is Councilman Joe Kastelic's.
McGill, 83, said he is "feeling well" and has recovered from his health issues "after the prayers and help from my wife, Sally, and my many friends."
McGill served as mayor for 11 years. He resigned the post as of Nov. 30, 2012, and was replaced by Council President James Fisher, 60. Fisher's current term expires Dec. 31, and the post will be up for election in November.
McGill said he didn't want to take on the day-to-day duties of mayor again, but instead would rather like to be involved with the legislative part of government.
Noting that he has served the city for 23 years -- he was a Councilman prior to his mayoral stint -- McGill said he believes he can still help residents and wants to follow up on "some things that I started."
"The city accomplished many goals in the 1990s and 2000s," he said. "Now that most of the hard work is done, it should be a more fun time ahead. The city is in wonderful financial shape, and we've done a good job of improving our infrastructure."
In addition to the mayor's and Kastelic's seats, Council spots for Wards 1, 3 and 5 are up for election this year. Board of Education seats held by Gerald Kohanski, Pam Mehallis and Beverly Kuch also will be on the fall ballot.
