Ravenna Cashland robbed, man arrested

A Cleveland man was arrested Saturday morning and charged in the robbery of the Cashland store in Ravenna Township.

Jawuan Terry Williams, 25, with a last known address of 15610 Lakeshore in Cleveland, was arrested by the Portage Counth Sheriff's department, Sheriff David Doak announced.

Doak reported that Williams allegedly approached an employee of the store, located at 3477 S.R. 59, at 8:30 a.m. as she arrived to open the store.

When she opened the door, Williams came from around the building and followed her in, Doak said. He then brandished a semi automatic handgun and ordered the employee to empty an undisclosed amount of money from the safe.

When a second employee arrived for work, Williams fled out the back door, Doak said.

Deputy Eric Shaffer was in the area and checked the surrounding residential area, and came upon Williams. He arrested him without incident, and the suspect was identified at the scene as the subject involved in the robbery.

When he was arrested, Williams no longer had the handgun. The Portage County Urban Search and Rescue Team searched the area, and found a gun matching the description of the one used in the robbery.

Williams is being held without bond at the Portage County Jail. He has been charged with aggravated robbery, a first degree felony. Williams will be arraigned at 1:15 am. on Monday at the Portage County Courthouse.

The Cashland employee was not injured during the robbery.

Members from the Kent, Streetsboro, Aurora, Ravenna City, Ravenna Township, and Brimfield Fire Department responded to assist in the search as part of the Portage County USAR Team.

  • Remember former Asst.KSU police chief/criminal justice teacher @KSU?...Didn't he have a loaded gun/drugs in his car when arrested? Isn't he working a program in Lieu of Conviction/still teaching @KSU?

  • Well I wonder what the odds are that he will plead the” drugs made me do it defense”. This has become such a great defense that it is known all over. I will bet that in Cleveland they even have sit down with all the criminals explaining it. I wonder how long before it will be taught at Akron Law School and John Carol U. It will be interesting to see how the drug defense trumps the use of a firearm. If there is a way around it our judges will find it.
