A Streetsboro man who admitted shooting a Kent teen on Silver Meadows Boulevard in 2012 has been sentenced to nine years in prison.
Portage County Common Pleas Judge Laurie Pittman recently sentenced Dustin A. Dent, 25, with a last known address of 9247 Briar Drive, to six years in prison for attempted aggravated murder, a first-degree felony, and three consecutive years for using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
He received credit for 231 days served in the Portage County jail awaiting trial.
Dent pleaded guilty on Jan. 25, admitting that he shot Marcus D. Coleman, 17, on July 18, 2012. Coleman was shot in the shoulder and grazed in the head by a bullet during the incident. He was taken to Akron City Hospital, where he was treated and released.
Portage County Prosecutor Victor Vigluicci said Coleman told Kent police detectives he was sitting outside a building in the 700 block of Silver Meadows Boulevard the day of the incident when a white male in his 20s, about 5 feet 5 inches tall and 150 pounds with a tattoo on his neck, approached him and three other people.
The suspect "asked if his name was Marcus. He said it was. The white male then pulled out a gun and started shooting at him," Vigluicci said.
Coleman managed to deflect the gun with his left arm, and was shot in the shoulder. He turned and tried to run into the building and was shot a second time, falling to the ground.
Coleman told police "'the dude must have thought I was dead because he quit shooting. I got up off the ground and he shot me in the head,'" Vigluicci said.
Coleman reached safety inside while, witnesses said, the gunman climbed a fence and fled the scene, Vigluicci said. A Kent police officer in the area heard the shots and responded, finding Coleman inside the building bleeding, he said.
A search of the area failed to turn up the gunman, but officers found a plastic bag nearby that witnesses said the gunman had wrapped around the gun during the shooting, Vigluicci said.
Officers also canvassed the area for other witnesses, and got the name Dustin Dent as a person fitting that description who was living with and dating a female resident of the 900 block of Lawrence Court, he said. Officers put Dent's photo in a lineup, and Coleman and the three other witnesses identified Dent, Vigluicci said.
Dent later turned himself in to the Medina County Sheriff's Office and was brought to the Portage County jail and held on bond pending trial.
The gun was not recovered, but police seized ammunition from Dent's girlfriend's apartment. She told police she threw out the rest of Dent's belongings when she realized he was not likely to get out of jail, Vigluicci said.
