NEOMED high school programs seek applicants

Published:

High school students interested in pursuing careers in medicine and pharmacy can gain hands-on experience at Northeast Ohio Medical University through two established enrichment programs now open for enrollment--Pathways to Pharmacy and HealthSuccess.

Pathways to Pharmacy allows students from groups underrepresented in pharmacy to experience the pharmacy profession and career options for pharmacists through mentorship, enrichment programs and industry exposure in order to increase the number of students who graduate from high school and pursue pharmacy as a career.

Students will become familiar with basic pharmacy terminologies, gain understanding of the pharmacy profession and learn the necessary requirements to matriculate into the College of Pharmacy at NEOMED.

Applications will be accepted through May 3 for the 2013 program, which will be held June 24 to 28. Only current high school sophomores and juniors (at least 16 years of age) with a minimum 3.0 grade point average and at least a 90 percent school attendance rate will be considered for the program.

HealthSuccess is a selective enrichment program designed to help prepare students in grades nine through 11 who are interested in studying medicine or pharmacy.

Site visits will also occur throughout the program, allowing students to become familiar with the associated hospitals, pharmacies and universities that partner with NEOMED.

HealthSuccess programs are typically offered once a month on Saturdays from September through May. Applications will be accepted through July 26. To be considered for participation, students must reside in the greater Akron, Canton, Cleveland or Youngstown areas, must currently be enrolled in eighth through 10th grade, have a GPA of 3.5 or better, and complete an application process.
