Benefit dinner for Portage County sheriff's deputy Gary Smith is June 7 at Kent Elks Club

The staff of the Portage County Sheriff's Office is holding a benefit dinner for one of their own who is battling cancer.

Deputy Gary Smith has served the citizens of Portage County for 17 years. He recently was diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing treatment.

The dinner will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the Kent Elks Club, 2265 E. Erie St. behind the Twin Star Bowling Alley.

Donation for the dinner is $10. There will also be a cash bar, and a silent auction will also take place as a part of the event.

All proceeds will go directly to Smith and his family to assist with medical expenses.
