"Cops and Fishing Day" to bring Hiram police, children closer together

by ALICIA BALOG Published:

Families in the Hiram community can spend time together and with the Hiram Police Department at its second annual "Cops and Fishing Day" Saturday, Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Camp Asbury in Hiram Township.

Hiram Police Chief Ed Samec started the program at Middlefield when he was its police chief and brought it to Hiram.

He said it's a way to build lasting bonds between police officers and children.

"In this day and age, our families are so busy," Samec said. "Mom's going this way. Dad's going that way. ... We forget about communication. That is imperative to a strong family foundation."
