Voters will have a loaded ballot for the Nov. 5 general election. In addition to candidates for city, school board, village and township offices, they will consider a range of levies and other issues.
A total of 27 issues were submitted to the Portage County Board of Elections by Wednesday's deadline. The board will certify which issues go to the ballot on Aug. 19.
Voters in Brady Lake will be asked to dissolve the village. The issue was placed on the ballot by a group of residents dissatisfied with the village's services.
At the same time, the village is seeking renewal of a 2.2-mill levy for fire protection for five years.
Six school districts filed petitions for issues.
The Ravenna school district filed for an additional 4.9-mill tax for a continuing period, with 3 mills for current expenses and 1.9 mills for on-going permanent improvements.
Streetsboro schools filed for a bond issue of 4.56 mills and an additional tax of 0.5 mills for buildings and facilities and general permanent improvements. The issue will fund a new high school.
Field schools are seeking an additional 5.5 mills tax for three years, with 4 mills for current expenses and 1.5 mills for permanent improvements.
James A. Garfield school district is seeking renewal of a 5.51-mill levy for five years for emergency requirements.
Mogadore school district is seeking an additional 5.9 mills for a continuing period for current expenses.
Windham school district is seeking renewal of a 3.95-mill levy for five years for emergency requirements.
Three countywide levies filed include a 1-mill renewal levy for the Portage County Mental Health & Recovery Board, and two renewals for the Portage County Board of Developmental Disabilities. The board is seeking renewal of a 0.9-mill levy for 10 years and a 2-mill levy for five years.
Kent is seeking approval of a 0.25 percent income tax increase for construction of a new police headquarters and jail, running until 2038.
Aurora has submitted a five-year levy for an additional 1.2 mills for police protection, and a zoning map amendment for the ballot.
Three local options seeking permission to sell spirituous liquor on Sundays are headed to the ballot.
In Kent, Buffalo Wild Wings in the downtown area filed a petition for Sunday sales. Streetsboro has two: one submitted by Stringz & Wingz and one by Kristena Wanyek at 9244 Market Square Drive.
Mogadore filed two village charter amendments -- one on the mayoral appointment of clerk-treasurer and one on the assignment of clerk-treasurer duties during absence.
In the townships, Atwater is seeking renewal of a 2.9-mill fire protection levy for five years.
Charlestown is seeking renewal of a 1.5-mill fire protection, ambulance and emergency medical services levy for five years.
Edinburg is seeking replacement of a 2-mill levy for fire protection, ambulance and emergency medical services for five years.
Franklin Township is seeking renewal of a 2-mill levy for roads and bridges for five years.
Palmyra is seeking renewal of a 1-mill levy for five years for fire protection, ambulance and emergency medical services.
Paris has two levies. The first is a renewal for five years of a 2-mill tax for roads and bridges. The second is a 1-mill additional tax for current expenses for five years.
The Mantua-Shalersville Fire District is seeking renewal of a five-year, 2.99-mills levy for ambulance and emergency medical services.
