The Portage County Health Department hopes to be operating out of new space on Oakwood Street in Ravenna by the middle of September.
DuWayne Porter, head of the department, said the new location on the top floor of the Resources on Oakwood Campus will give it about the same space but will be a more convenient and usable layout.
For a year, the health department has been working out of two locations in the Portage County Administration Building. Most of its offices are on the third floor of the original building, and its child and adult immunization clinics are next to the Women, Infants and Children offices on the ground floor.
The new location at 705 Oakwood St. will allow the department to consolidate all its services, Porter said.
Mark Frisone, executive director of Family & Community Services Inc., which owns the Oakwood building, said the health department is "really the anchor tenant we've been looking for."
F&CS transformed the former ODOT District 4 headquarters into a center for nonprofit agencies, including the Portage County Senior Center, the Portage Park District and others.
Porter is happy with the move.
"We've had great cooperation from F&CS. The health department is going to be with complementary nonprofit agencies," he said.
Thursday, county commissioners approved entering the lease agreement with F&CS. Under state law, county commissioners must provide space for a county health department. The proposed lease calls for the county to pay $5 per square foot rent to F&CS for the space and utilities.
The space being vacated will be taken over by the county department of Job & Family Services, which will pay the county $9.81 per square foot for the space.
