The father of Ravenna Councilwoman Amy Michael died Saturday after an apparent medical emergency led to an automobile accident in Rootstown.
Mark Jacobs, 72, was exiting southbound from a business at the intersection of Interstate 76 and S.R. 44 when he lost control of the Ford Taurus he was driving and hit the guardrail on August Avenue at about 5:40 p.m., according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.
No other vehicles were involved.
Jacobs was immediately transported to Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna by the Rootstown Fire Department, but he did not survive.
Ohio Highway Patrol Sgt. Don Dunbar said the cause of death has not yet been named by the Portage County coroner, but it appeared that a health-related issue caused Jacobs to lose control of the car.
"There were apparently some medical conditions that were brought out at the hospital and at this point are believed to have an influence on what happened in the crash and why it happened," Dunbar said, adding that it wasn't clear if Jacobs died in transit or at the hospital.
Jacobs' wife, Nancy, was also in the vehicle, but was not seriously injured. She was transported to Robinson Memorial Hospital by Randolph Fire Department.
Dunbar said there was no airbag deployment from the accident, and both Mark and Nancy Jacobs were wearing seat belts.
