Ravenna write-in candidate withdraws

By Mike Sever | staff writer Published:

Kenneth L. Roach Sr. has given his intent to withdraw as a write-in candidate for the Ward 1 Ravenna council race.

Roach sent a letter Monday to the Portage County Board of Elections saying he was withdrawing "due to unforeseen obligations" at his place of employment and a business venture.

Roach filed his declaration of intent to run as a write-in on July 19. However, board policy is that all petition-related documentation, such as withdrawals, must be made in person -- so Roach's candidacy is still active until he personally delivers the letter to elections officials.

The elections board had not yet acted on Roach's intent to run as a write-in. Roach filed July 19 and the elections board will not meet until Aug. 19.

Two Ward 1 candidates who will appear on the ballot are incumbent Sharon Spencer and former councilman Steven R. Bailey.

There is still time for write-in candidates to enter local races across the county. They have until 4 p.m. Aug. 26 to file with the elections board a declaration of their intent to be a write-in candidate.
