Bike racks soon may be required in new construction projects in Kent.
Kent Planning Commission approved zoning amendments Tuesday that include requiring bike racks outside new construction. The amendments won't become law until approved by City Council.
The new provisions would require: One rack space per every 10,000 square feet for professional services; per every 25,000 square feet of retail space; per every five units or bedrooms at multi-family and other group housing. Multi-family homes with more than 50 units would be required to have at least 10 spaces plus one more for every unit over 50.
Two spaces would be needed at offices with between one and 50 employees, four spaces for 51 to 100 employees, and six spaces for an office with more than 100 employees.
If approved, the changes would affect new construction and would be applied if an existing property improves its site.
