The summer HEAP program will end Aug. 30. Eligible Portage families may be able to receive assistance with an electric bill and a 6,000 Btu air conditioner and/or window fan through the program operated through the Community Action Council of Portage County.
Since July 1, CAC has provided nearly 300 families with electric bill assistance and also distributed over 100 window air conditioners and 350 box fans to eligible families.
According to Tish Nebe, CAC's HEAP coordinator, CAC has limited appointments available through Aug. 30, but families can visit the agency during the open walk-in times on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 8 and 11 a.m.
Walk-ins are limited to the first six families. Benefits are limited to current electric bill up to a maximum of $175 in assistance, and/or an energy star air conditioner and up to two box fans.
To be eligible, families must be below 175 percent of the federal poverty level -- or about $41,213 per year for a family of four, meet other federal guidelines, and could not have received an air conditioner through HEAP for the past 3 years.
