The Hiram community can enjoy a day of hot rods, hot food and hot prizes at the Hiram Police Department's Hot Rod Car Show from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on Hayden and Dean streets.
Hiram Police Chief Ed Samec is working with and Garrettsville Mayor Rick Patrick, who Samec said is a car show enthusiast, and Kepich Ford of Garrettsville, to organized the event.
Samec hopes up to 150 cars register. He said it's free to register cars and for spectators, but donations will be accepted for the "Shop with a Cop" program, where police officers take the area's underprivileged children Christmas shopping.
He said through grants and fundraisers the department can raise more money to help more families. Last year, the department helped seven families.
Each child gets $250 to buy toys or clothes at Christmas at the Streetsboro K-Mart.
"They're so excited and grateful that they can get stuff for mom and dad, grandma and grandpa, brother, sister, pets, their dogs," Samec said. "They always think of themselves last. Then to see the look on their faces, knowing when they see that cart full of gifts, that's because of them."
