The Ravenna Police Department and arson investigators are looking into an incident in which a Fortis College employee was assaulted Friday morning and a fire was set inside the building on Enterprise Parkway, causing closure for a day.
Ravenna Police Capt. David Rarrick said officers responded to the private college at 653 Enterprise Parkway at 6:24 a.m. for a report of a burglary. Officers were met by an employee who reported being attacked inside the building. She managed to flee and run to nearby Paris Healthcare to get help.
At the same time, a fire was started in a hallway at Fortis College, which remains under investigation, he said.
Employees of Paris Healthcare, located next door to the college, managed to put the fire out before the Ravenna Fire Department arrived on scene, he said.
The victim was treated for burns and other injuries at the scene by Ravenna EMS personnel, then taken to a hospital for further treatment. Her injuries are not life-threatening, Rarrick said, and her name is being withheld at this time.
Ravenna police checked the interior and exterior of Fortis College and found no suspects. No information on a potential suspect or suspects is available, he said.
He said rumors that there was a SWAT team on the scene assisting in the search were not true.
Sonya Hartburg, campus president, would not state what area of the building was affected.
"The response from the police and fire departments was great," she said.
She said the building was being cleaned Friday but would reopen on Tuesday.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Ravenna police at 330-296-6486.
