The murder trial of Adrian A. Barker, accused of fatally injuring Kent State University student Christopher Kernich during a fight on East Main Street in Kent in November 2009, will continue in Portage County Common Pleas Court today.
There was no testimony in the case Thursday after Judge John Enlow granted the parties a day off for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and a religious holiday.
The Portage County Prosecutor's Office and Kent police allege that Barker "blind-sided" Kernich, a Dayton-area native, with a punch to the back of his head as Kernich and Barker's friend, Ronald G. Kelly, squared up to fight in the street on Nov. 15, 2009.
Barker's attorneys have countered that Kent police misidentified the parties responsible and that another man, Kelly's roommate Glenn P. Jefferson Jr., could have inflicted the fatal blows on Kernich.
