The Stow woman who was injured after a Hudson woman drove her car into the lobby of the Stow Post Office last week was listed in serious condition as of Thursday, according to Akron City Hospital.
Sheila K. Reydak, 51, was hospitalized after the 2009 Toyota Camry that crashed into the post office pinned her leg to the wall, according to a witness.
No charges have been filed against the 50-year-old Hudson woman who was driving, and in a Tuesday email, Stow Police Lt. Anne Stirm wrote that "no one will be cited in the accident."
"Keep in mind, we cite for violation of law and that this in no way means that the driver of the vehicle that ran into the building is not at fault," wrote Stirm.
In a witness statement, a Stow man, a neighbor of Reydak, wrote that he was talking with Reydak in the lobby "when in a split second a car came crashing through the double doors and pinned Sheila's leg to the wall. I yelled to the lady driver to back the car up to release her leg. The car backed up and I yelled for a tourniquet to apply to her leg. Myself and others talked to Sheila to keep her awake till help arrived."
According to a police report, the driver was attempting to park her car in a space directly in front of the front doors at about 11:45 a.m. when she "pressed the accelerator instead of the brake...went over the top of the concrete parking barrier, across the sidewalk, thru the first glass doors and vestibule...then went through a second set of glass doors."
Police said the Stow Fire Department took the driver to Akron General Medical Center in Stow, where she was treated for injuries and released. A passenger in her car, a 15-year-old girl, was uninjured, according to police.
The Post Office closed after the accident, but Postal Service spokesperson David Van Allen said that temporary repairs were made later that day and the lobby was open to customers the following day. The post office was open for business Monday.
