On Tuesday, Dec. 3, Giving Tuesday marks the kickoff of the holiday giving season. Held the Tuesday after Thanksgiving on the heels of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this new national day of giving unifies charities, corporations and people to raise funds and awareness for important causes nationwide.
Hattie Larlham, a Portage County nonprofit organization that serves children and adults with developmental disabilities, is an official registered partner of Giving Tuesday for 2013. The organization is encouraging people to show their support for children and adults with developmental disabilities on this special day by visiting www.hattielarlham.org on Dec. 3 and making a donation. In the spirit of the movement, a generous Hattie Larlham donor has agreed to match all online donations made on Giving Tuesday, up to a maximum of $15,000.
Considering that Giving Tuesday thrives on the viral nature of social media, Hattie Larlham has engaged in a campaign across Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn in recent weeks to raise awareness for the day. The organization is asking its online followers to conclude the campaign by sharing Hattie Larlham's social media posts on Tuesday, Dec. 3 to encourage their friends to support the people with developmental disabilities the organization serves.
In 2012, the Giving Tuesday movement garnered 2.5 million social media impressions across the world, and the #Giving Tuesday hashtag was used 185,000 times. Bill Gates, the White House, the Clinton Foundation and numerous socially-conscious celebrities publically supported Giving Tuesday on their blogs and social media channels. Giving Tuesday intends to exceed those benchmarks in 2013 as communities and organizations mobilize to raise funds and awareness for charities, including Hattie Larlham.
