Hiram College announces plan for housing for veterans

Published:

Hiram College officials have announced that they are renovating space in a residence hall to house military veterans and their families. Renovation of the facility, Henry Hall, includes conversion of 44 double-occupancy rooms into single private quarters for veterans attending Hiram under the post 9/11 GI Bill.

The new dedicated space will be named Freedom Center at Henry Hall.

"There are a growing number of veterans returning from service who are interested in pursuing their dreams of a college education," said Hiram College President Tom Chema. "We're taking steps to meet the needs of our service men and women, welcoming them into our community and exposing them to the Hiram brand of education which will prepare them well for this next phase of their lives."

Hiram has partnered with Patriot Development, LLC to undertake the renovation project, which will be completed before Spring Semester classes begin at Hiram on Jan. 13.

The first 20 veterans to sign on to the program will receive free housing for the first two months of their time at Hiram.

An information session is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at the Holiday Inn at I-77 and Rockside Road in Independence. Representatives from Hiram College and Patriot Development will be on hand to answer questions related to the offerings to veterans and their families.

"Our goal is to provide the best environment for the successful transition from the military back into civilian life," said Hiram DeJesus, President of Patriot Development. "What Hiram offers returning veterans is a beautiful setting just 40 minutes away from the vibrant metropolitan areas of Cleveland, Akron-Canton and Youngstown-Warren. This allows for the readjustment that experts consider crucial to bringing out the best of our country's valuable human assets."

Hiram's new residential offerings for veterans follow the action specified in the "Sea of Goodwill" document issued by the former Joint Chiefs Chairman, Admiral Mike Mullen, according to DeJesus.
