While many government offices are shutting down in response to frigid weather descending on the area, several warming centers are opening up.

Both The Center of Hope, 1034 W. Main St. in Ravenna, and Kent Social Services, 1066 S. Water St., Kent, will remain open continuously through Wednesday afternoon to provide warm locations for all people in need.

Both locations, operated by Family and Community Services, Inc., are open now and expected to stay open until 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Anyone in need of warmth for any reason is encouraged to visit the Kent and Ravenna locations.

Meanwhile, Portage County government offices will remain closed from 3 p.m. today until Wednesday morning. Those offices include the Portage County Administration Building, the Administration Building Annex, the Riddle Block Building, the Water Resources Department, the Dog Warden's Office, the Records Center and the Motor Pool.

The Solid Waste Management District has announced it will make every effort to complete the curbside recycling pickups scheduled for today. There will be no recycling pickups tomorrow. Pickups will resume on Wednesday following a holiday schedule with a one-day delay.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind-chill warning that remains in effect until 9 a.m. Wednesday, with frosty wind gusts up to 35 mph tonight measuring as cold as 30 to 40 degrees below zero.
