The Hiram Police Department has received a $1,000 grant from the Walmart Local Giving program to fund the department's Bicycle Safety Rodeo during July 4 festivities in the village.

Hiram Police Chief Ed Samec said the grant was awarded through the Middlefield Walmart store.

"This grant award will make it possible for us to expand, enhance, and totally transform our bicycle safety rodeo event. We will be adding new activities that promote bicycle safety and skills that children will learn and demonstrate that will also enhance bicycle safety," he said.

Officer Dave Ovens coordinates the event. Samec said "many" more options will be available to officers to promote bicycle safety using the grant."Our goal is to reach as many children that we can and teach them safe practices," he said.

"We hold our community programs to a very high standard, we believe in giving back to the community and we are able to 'step it up' a notch or two with our Bicycle Safety Rodeo thanks to the Walmart Local Giving" grant award, Samec added.

The date anytime of the Bicycle Safety Rodeo will be announced later on the websites www.hirampolice.org and www.hiramvillage.org.
