Ravenna health department is meeting topic

Ravenna City Council's Health and Public Safety committee meeting will hold a work session at 5 p.m. Monday. The city's health department is the sole item on the agenda.

Council and its committees have planned several discussions of the issue in the past, but all were rescheduled because of scheduling conflicts on the part of various officials.

The city's Board of Health has voted to send its vital statistics service to the city of Kent to save expenses. Some city council members and business owners have asked that the service remain in Ravenna so residents can obtain birth and death certificates locally.

The city also contracts with the Portage County Health Department to handle the remaining services the health department once offered. The county does not issue birth and death certificates.

Ravenna issues certificates for births and deaths that take place within the city limits, including Robinson Memorial Hospital. Kent, which is the county registrar, issues certificates for births and deaths that take place elsewhere in the county, including Ravenna township.
