U.S. Rep Tim Ryan is among a group of community and business leaders urging Youngstown State University to hire former football coach Jim Tressel as its next president.
According to news reports, the Youngstown-area Democrat was among 31 local leaders to sign a letter delivered to the YSU Board of Trustees on Wednesday.
YSU President Randy Dunn, who replaced Cynthia Anderson last year, resigned after just seven months on the job to become president at Southern Illinois University.
Tressel was a football coach at YSU and Ohio State University and is now executive vice president for student success at the University of Akron.
Tressel told WFMJ-TV that he is happy with his current job.
According to the letter, Tressel "knows the importance of university collaborations with the private sector and local workforce. And he has the relationships and obvious leadership skills to build both the financial and organizational support for the YSU initiatives that will grow the university and broader economy."
The letter urged the YSU board to make Tressel an offer quickly.
