The Blue Rock Cafe in Hudson was crowded Thursday as patrons waited for Chelsea Handler to arrive to sign her new book, "Uganda Be Kidding Me."
Handler, who performed at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland later Thursday, arrived in Hudson to sign her book at 2 p.m. The first 100 fans gathered in a winding line around the interior of the cafe, at 5827 Darrow Road, while others lined up on the sidewalk outside.
Handler hosts the late-night talk show Chelsea Lately, on E! She is the author of the books, "My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands," "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," "Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang," "Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me" and her latest, "Uganda Be Kidding Me," in which Handler relates the trials and tribulations of traveling to Africa on a safari.
The Learned Owl Book Shop, an independent bookstore at 204 N. Main St., sponsored the book signing and gave out numbers in the order the book was reserved. Handler signed 100 books in the first half hour.
"I love Kate (Schlademan) and the Learned Owl, and she's (Handler) is supporting independent book stores," said Angela Newton of Hudson.
Marcy Schulman of Hudson was first in line. She saw a post on Facebook that Handler was coming.
"I'm a fan and jumped on it," Schulman said.
Joanna Hatzopoulos of Hudson said she is a fan of Handler and the Blue Rock Cafe.
"I've read all her books," said Regina Chluda of Hudson. "They're my comic relief."
Melinda Bednarik of Remindersville said she has been watching Handler since she was 16.
"I came to see Chelsea Handler because she's hilarious," Bednarik said. "She's a quick read. She's real and a little bit dirty."
Joey Klemm of Hudson said he came so Handler could sign his and his friends' books.
"I watch her on TV," Klemm said. "I bought three tickets for her show."
The line moved quickly, and although there was no time to chat with Handler, everyone walked away with a book and her signature.
