Portage County Sheriff: Boy, 11, dies in Johnson Road shooting incident

By Dave O'Brien | Staff Writer Published: March 12, 2014 4:31 PM

An 11-year-old boy was shot and killed Wednesday at a home on Johnson Road in Franklin Township, according to Portage County Sheriff David Doak.

The suspected shooter also is a juvenile, Doak said. He refused to release the names of the victim and the shooter because of their ages and the ongoing investigation, he said.

The incident took place at 695 Johnson Road, just north of Kent city limits, just before noon Wednesday.

Doak said deputies responded to the residence after getting a report that an 11-year-old boy had been shot.

The boy was dead when deputies arrived, he said. The juvenile who allegedly fired the gun is cooperating with investigators, Doak said.

Doak's office is consulting with the Portage County Prosecutor's Office because of "some legal issues" in the case he said.

"It's nothing we're going to have resolved today," he said Wednesday.

AJ was my second cousin, and he was a beautiful young boy. I am beyond astounded at this event and grieve for his loss. I hope once our pain grows less, then we can bring some good change to the world from this. Let us never forget him and his loving soul.

Someone that young should have never been in that situation, however, I cannot change time, so for now, Heaven will have a beautiful young angel full of hope, peace, and spirit.

We have lost an amazing person, but have gained an etheral light above.

No one wants to say it but the gun owners are 100% accountable and should be prosecuted plain and simple. This should be a lesson for everyone else to lock your guns, teach your kids to never handle any hand gun or rifle without an adult and teach kids to NEVER EVER POINT a gun at someone. Very, very sad and prayers to everyone involved.
