After serving since 2008, Streetsboro Parks & Recreation Director Greg Mytinger is heading for a job closer to home.
Mytinger, a resident of Jackson Township in Stark County, said he has accepted a position as assistant parks and recreation director for the city of Massillon.
"The commute was getting to me, as far as not being able to spend time with my family," he said. "It's 15 to 20 minutes as opposed to an hour (coming to Streetsboro)."
Mytinger's 2014 salary is $58,372, and his last official day will be March 28, according to the Streetsboro Human Resources Department.
"Mr. Mytinger has done an outstanding job administering the many events and providing quality programming with the limited availability of financial resources," said Mayor Glenn Broska. "I really am sad we are losing him. Greg is a very, very good parks and recreation director. He put an enormous amount of effort into making [the department] the success it is."
Mytinger said his resignation and move has "nothing" to do with the administration or recent personnel changes affecting his department. Parks & Recreation Programmer Andrea Parma-Schaefer was recently laid off, and shortly before that, the Senior Services Department became Mytinger's responsibility as Katie Mathies, the former senior services director, took a position in the finance department.
"It was unfortunate that everything kind of fell within the same month," said Mytinger.
He said he's enjoyed the past couple of years working under Broska.
"It was not an easy decision," Mytinger said. "The amount of progress we've made and the impact we've had on the community has been really great. Looking back, it makes me smile to know we did such great things in such a short period of time."
Some of the events he's most proud of include Trunk-or-Treat and the Trick-or-Treat Trot. Internally, he said getting the department to the point where it could accept credit card payments was an important improvement.
"I've worked with a great staff," said Mytinger. "We've always thought outside the box."
One example of that "outside the box" thinking was a Bigfoot program the department hosted, which attracted 300 attendees.
Director of Human Resources Clay Morris said there isn't a set deadline for resumes, but he said the city wants to hire a new director "as soon as we can."
