A Hudson man died early this morning after being struck by a train in Franklin Township, according to the Portage County Sheriff's office.

Sheriff David Doak said Edward W. Dye, 43, with a last known address at Willow Lake Drive in Hudson, was on foot when he was hit by a Norfolk Southern train shortly before 12:30 a.m. this morning about a half-mile east of Diagonal Road and west of Ravenna Road in Franklin Township.

Doak noted it's unclear why Dye was on the tracks.

Dye was reportedly conscious at the scene for a few minutes after responders located him around 12:38 a.m., Doak said. Dye then became unconscious, and efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Other details of Dye's injuries were not immediately available, but an autopsy is expected, Doak noted.

An investigation is ongoing, Doak said. No charges have been filed against the train operator.
