The parents of a Garrettsville police officer who died in 2007 have donated $1,000 to the Nelson-Garrettsville Community Cupboard.
Deirdre and Dan Svab made the donation in memory of their son, Donovan, who died after his car collided with a vehicle driven by a drunk driver. The family asked that the donation be used for refrigerators and freezers for the food pantry.
"So that's what it will be used for," said Joe Leonard, co-founder of the Community Cupboard.
The food pantry, in addition to being overwhelmed with donations for food, is also overwhelmed with donations of refrigerators and freezers to store it all.
"Refrigerators and freezers are coming in from all over the place," he said. "It's pretty chaotic."
Whatever appliances the pantry cannot use will be shared with other food pantries in the region, Leonard said.
