An 18-year-old Geauga County man is to be arraigned today on charges of stabbing his grandmother to death in January.
Prosecutors said Clayton Phillips fatally stabbed Ruth Phillips, 81, Jan. 21 in the basement of her Russell Township home.
The teenager, who lived with his grandmother, was arrested last Thursday at the Geauga County Jail where he has been held since. Jan. 22 on a probation violation.
Phillips was arrested on charges of aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence, possessing criminal tools, misuse of credit cards and gross abuse of a corpse. The aggravated murder count carries a maximum sentence of life without parole.
Phillips was previously convicted of theft and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He reportedly used his grandmother's credit card and car without her permission in September.
Ruth Phillips was found dead after a friend asked police to check on her. The retired nurse spent 52 years caring for the elderly.
Russell Township is just north of the Portage County line.
