The Volkswagen dealership that was to be built along S.R. 14 in Streetsboro in front of Shady Lake Apartments, may soon have a new site.
The Collection Auto Group, which recently hosted grand opening celebrations for Kia of Streetsboro and Nissan of Streetsboro, plans to use vacant land between those Classic Drive dealerships to help accommodate the new Volkswagen dealership, according to Bernie Moreno, president of The Collection Auto Group.
"It would actually be an expansion of the Kia dealership," he said. "You'll definitely be able to tell which side is the Kia side and which side is the Volkswagen side."
He said the addition would be about 23,000 square feet, the same as the building that was planned across the street.
The open land between the dealerships is on the same lot as the Kia dealership.
Moreno said he spent about $6.5 million for the dealership and land.
Having three dealerships within walking distance will be very convenient for customers, he added.
"Typically, clients want choice," he said. "If you're looking to buy a car in that price range, you can walk to all thre."
The plan has yet to be approved by the city, said Moreno, who said he would work to bring in good development for the parcel in front of Shady Lake.
"Obviously, we want to work with the city of Streetsboro," he said. "We're marketing (the land) now. Obviously, if the town doesn't approve us, we won't sell it."
Streetsboro Planning Director John Cieszkowski Jr. said the city hasn't received plans from The Collection Auto Group yet, but Mayor Glenn Broska said a special Planning and Zoning Commission will be set later this month to consider plans.
Moreno said he isn't set on his plans for the Route 14 property. He said The Collection Auto Group may sell it, but it may also develop another dealership there.
"I just have to buy the dealership first," he said. "The problem is, you've got to find somebody who wants to sell. We also have a parcel in Hudson to sell; it's a lot of land, about 14 acres."
Broska said he hopes Moreno will build a domestic dealership at the lot in front of Shady Lake Apartments.
The Streetsboro parcel in front of Route 14 is seven acres, and the proposed Kia/Volkswagen site totals about 12.6 acres, according to Portage County GIS.
I'm a bit stunned by what appears to be a surprising lack of foresight with the VW dealership location. No doubt there is more behind this than the article suggests. I would like to see a Fiat dealership in town. This up and coming brand in this country is barely represented in Ohio. Further, it would likely be much easier to get a Fiat dealership than a domestic one.
