Joseph Thornton found guilty of Windham Township murder


Joseph Thornton has been found guilty of murder in the shooting death of his nephew Jason Canan on Dec. 25, 2013 in Windham Township.

After less than a hour of deliberation, a jury handed down the verdict in Portage County Common Pleas Court in Ravenna.

Thornton's sentence includes additional years for the use of a firearm. He also was found guilty of tampering with evidence. He faces a possible sentence of 18 years to life in prison for the murder charge and 1 to 3 years on the tampering with evidence charge. Sentencing will be at a later date.
