Kent police announced this morning that a Portage County grand jury has indicted an Edinburg woman on charges she struck and killed a 37-year-old Rootstown man with her vehicle in downtown Kent on July 17.

Allison E. Barton, 22, of 7468 Tallmadge Road, was indicted on the following charges:

• two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, one second-degree felony and one third-degree felony;

• two counts of failure to stop after an accident/leaving the scene of an accident, one third-degree felony and one first-degree misdemeanor

• two counts of operating a vehicle under the influence, both first-degree misdemeanors

According to her indictment, Barton had been drinking alcohol and also had heroin in her system when her 2006 Jeep Liberty struck Richard M. Schoepe on North Water Street near Columbus Street in Kent on the morning of July 17.

Schoepe was pronounced dead at Akron City Hospital following the crash. He was an employee of Star of the West Milling Co., located near the scene of the crash.

Barton allegedly fled, but was arrested soon after by Kent police and held on a misdemeanor charge in the Portage County jail while the investigation proceeded, according to Kent Police Chief Michelle Lee, who authorized today's announcement of additional charges.

Barton is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges this week in Portage County Common Pleas Court, according to court records.

Shows how bad drugs are in Kent. Girl was driving stoned on heroin!

Cops need to do more than just arresting a small handful of street level drug dealers every year to make the papers.

From above:..Barton allegedly fled, but was arrested soon after by Kent police...

*** I thought the Brimfield PD caught the woman, then called Kent PD to come and get her.
