Heavy winds across the county on Wednesday toppled trees and knocked out power lines.

A large tree that fell across S.R. 43 in Kent outside Central School, blocking both lanes of traffic from Fairchild Avenue to Park Avenue. Kent Police and Fire departments were on scene, redirecting traffic while crews from Davey Tree Co. worked to clear the tree from the roadway.

The tree, which was toppled by heavy winds barely missed power lines on the south side of S.R. 43 across from the school. A representative from the school board said power flickered but never went off, and school remained in session.

Kent Fire Department said the roadway should be open in several hours before rush hour began.

The Portage County Engineer’s office also said the following roads were temporarily closed:

Infirmary Road between Beck and Dudley roads, as well as between S.R. 14 and Dawley Road; Pioneer Trail between Vaughn and Peck roads; and Peck Road between McCormick and Lovers Lane. The Ohio Department of Transportation also listed S.R. 82 at Bryant Road is closed.

First Energy is reporting power outages across Portage County, with the majority affected in Mantua Township, Hiram Township, Nelson Township, Streetsboro, Ravenna Township and Shalersville.
