April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Along with pinwheels decorating the lawn of the Children's Service Building in Ravenna, Portage County Job & Family Services will host two events to bring awareness to this issue. The first will be April 18 at 11 a.m., JFS will host a free public forum on shaken baby syndrome presented by University Hospital Portage Medical Center Pediatrician Dr. Jason Tatka at 253 S. Chestnut St. in Ravenna. Then, on April 25 at 2 p.m. Portage County Government employees will be releasing balloons for this cause. "We encourage local schools, fire and police departments, churches, social service agencies and community members to get involved on that day as well by releasing a balloon, ringing a bell or running a siren at the same time," the agency said in a statement. "We can also show our solidarity against abuse by wearing blue on that day. Let's stand together to eliminate abuse in our community." If someone suspects child abuse or neglect, call the 24 hour abuse and neglect hotline at 330-296-CARE. For more information on events, please contact Public Information Officer Kim Bushek at Kim.Bushek@jfs.ohio.gov or 330-357-7190.
