A Garrettsville man allegedly operating his vehicle while intoxicated suffered severe injuries following a crash on S.R. 82 in Howland Township in Trumbull County, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.

A preliminary investigation showed a 2002 Ford F-250 driven by Mark Meadows, 45, of Garrettsville, suffered a mechanical malfunction and slid off the left side of the roadway at about 3:28 p.m. Wednesday, according to the patrol. As it slid down the embankment, it struck a tree and caught fire. The driver became trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by the fire department. The eastbound lanes of S.R. 82 were closed for about 50 minutes.

Meadows suffered severe injuries and was flown by Stat MedEvac to St. Elizabeth’s Health Center in Youngstown, Ohio.

Howland Township Police and Fire, as well as Bazetta Township Police, assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation at this time. The patrol said this is Meadows 10th OVI violation and felony OVI charges will be formally filed Thursday.
